JUDGES had a tough task in the hotly-contested first Pharlanne Grand Gingerbread House competition in Kelso to raise money for charity last week. The event raised an estimated £700 for Children 1st Roxburghshire though money is still coming in.

Around 150 people came to Ednam House Hotel on Saturday to see the gingerbread houses.

Pharlanne’s Anne Brooks said: “The standard of entries was phenomenal, with the kids showing great flair and ingenuity. The adults have been totally inspired and the interest and enthusiasm has been fantastic.”

Judges Ralph Brooks, also of Pharlanne, Ednam House Hotel head chef and owner, Lea Harris, and Christine Mitchell of Earlston’s Cakes by Christine, made their decisions last Friday, giving the adult title to Jane Stewart who won a Christmas hamper.

The high school winner was Erin Lathangie and the primary school prize went to Leigh Anderson. The charity committee thanked the Brooks for sponsoring, hosting and their help in organising the inaugural competition.
