WOOLER

At their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,200 lambs and 226 ewes.

Lamb numbers curtailed by adverse weather conditions selling vendors receiving returns greater than previous weeks.

Tex.x:- £77 Henlaw, £76.80, £76 Inland Pasture, £75 Mindrum Farming Co (2) and Greenhead, Reston, £74.50 Inland Pasture and Ladykirk, £74 Henlaw and Ladykirk. Chev:- £71.50, £70 Humbleheugh. CM:- £71 High Learchild. Ven:- £70 (3) South Lyham. Mule:- £64.50 Great Ryle.

ST BOSWELLS

John Swan Ltd sold 82 clean cattle, 42 OTM cattle,

2740 new season lambs and 566 ewes

Bullocks (48) averaged 208.9p per kg and sold to 239p (-2.2p on week)

Heifers (30) averaged 206.8p per kg and sold to 234p (-2.5p on week)

4 young bulls averaged 200.5p per kg and sold to 217p (n/c on week),

42 beef type OTM cattle averaged 142.4p per kg and sold to 205p (+4.8p on the week)

At Show & Sale of Beef Type Cows, Champion was awarded to Wester Middleton scaling 810kgs to £1482.30(1.3), Reserve was awarded to Mosstower scaling 730kgs to £1343.20(1.84).

2740 new season lambs averaged 158.1p per kg and sold to £94 (-2.1p on week)

566 ewes averaged £59.37and sold to £121 for tups & £103 for ewes (+ £11.18 on week).

LONGTOWN

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 60 prime cattle, 3 young bulls, 32 over thirty month cattle, 5,179 prime lambs and 5,635 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 29th November 2012.

An increased number of prime cattle met keen demand and a larger ringside of buyers ensured averages were well up on the week. The sale was topped at 227.5p for a Limousin heifer from Messrs R. Neill, Upper Tinwald purchased by John Little, others to 225.5p (twice) both from J. & N. Blaylock & Son, Hallburn. Limousin bullocks sold to 221.5p shown by D.J. Garthwaite & Son, Wyseby Hill Cottage. Top price per head of £1,616.90 for a Limousin bullock from N. Forster, Haining House.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd conducted their Annual Term Machinery Sale at Kelso Racecourse on Friday 23rd November 2012. The sale featured the Reduction of Slater Contracting (Swinton) Machinery.

Trade was the dearest experienced with buyers coming from all over the UK to this popular sale. Prices:- JD Tractor 6920S 04 Reg £21,600; 28ft Bailley Flat Trailer £5,400; Penderfeed Cattle Handling System £5,000; Marshall 211 Trailer £3,500; Griffiths 9 Ton Trailer £2,000; Low Loader £1,500; Dowdeswell 6 Furrow Plough £1,300; Water Bowser £920; IAE Cattle Crush £880; Major Topper £820; Accord Planter £800; IAE Cattle Crush £580; Set of Simba Rollers £470; Ransome Cultivator £450; Allman Sprayer £450; Ifor Williams Car Trailer £380; Tractor Forks £250; Claas Wheels £230; Brogan Fuel Tank £220; Premier Sheep Turner £210.

Border Livestock Exchange Ltd to week ending Friday 30th November 2012 sold 141 Prime Cattle including 43 Cows. 1,946 Prime Lambs; 646 Store Lambs and 74 Store Cattle.

Top prices continue to rise with new records being set every week. Organic 20 month old Home Bred Steers from Cresswell Farms, Belford sold to 435p per kg and £1,447. Aberdeen Angus Cross Heifers from Easington Grange, Belford sold to 310p per kg.

Lambs also showed signs of improving with numbers of fleshy Lambs becoming scarcer. Texel Cross Lambs from Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso and Belstruther, Duns sold to 365p per kg. Suffolk Crosses from Hedgeley Farms, Powburn and Hardens, Duns also sold to 355p per kg.

Store Lambs are selling steadily and looking good value to the purchasers. Cheviot Crosses to £47, Texel Crosses to £50 and Suffolk Crosses to £52.50.
