The Border landscape painter Claudia Massie has opened an exhibition on Yarrow at Selkirk’s Forest Bookstore.

“She has 10 new works, mostly small oil paintings on panel,” writes shop owner Allan Harkness. “She’s on home territory, the Yarrow Valley, the Swire, St Mary’s Loch, places she has known since childhood.”

Massie, 34, from Philiphaugh near Selkirk, now living in Perthshire, depicts Yarrow with low autumn light picking out the valley. “The landscape is a challenge because I’m so familiar with it,” she told TheSouthern: “[The Border landscape artists] William Johnstone and Tom Scott are inspiring figures.”

Dr Harkness, a former university lecturer in art theory, praised Massie’s style. “Form and contour rhythms are accentuated in the brushwork,” he said.

The exhibition runs until Saturday, December 29. See www.claudiamassie.com for the artist’s work in Aberdeenshire, Perthshire and the Borders.
