PLANS have been approved to turn an empty Ettrickbridge home into a salmon smokehouse and office.
The application by Michael Bell received the backing of Scottish Borders Council’s planning department for his venture at Helmburn bungalow.
The business would employ two full-time staff and will aim to supply local restaurants and hotels, as well as major fish wholesalers in England, according to SBC’s planning website.
But planning officials attached a number of conditions, including the submission of a ventilation and odour control scheme.
Officers also said all preparation, production and storage has to take place in the smokehouse rather than elsewhere on the site.
