BORDERS MP Michael Moore has been named best Scottish politician at Westminster.

The 47-year-old was given the title at The Herald’s Scottish Politician of the Year Awards at a ceremony in Edinburgh last Friday.

The Lib Dem was honoured for his role as Secretary of State for Scotland in ensuring the independence referendum would be a straight yes-no vote, as well as his strong showing during the debate.

However, Scottish Borders Council leader David Parker missed out on claiming the Local Politician of the Year title.

Mr Parker, first elected to the council in 1995 and appointed SBC leader in 2003, was beaten to the award by Glasgow City Council leader Gordon Matheson, who took the Labour Party to victory in May’s council elections.

Previous winners of awards include Selkirk’s Derek Brownlee, the former Conservative MSP for the South of Scotland, who picked up the Donald Dewar Debater of the Year in 2010.
