A TOTAL of 23 firefighters attended flash flooding at a Galashiels town centre street last night, writes Kenny Paterson.
Several properties were washed out by one foot of water which cascaded onto Bank Street from two flooded burns at Livingston Place at around 5pm.
Fire crews were initially called to Livingston Place, which was under three foot of water, before making their way to Bank Street, which was closed off by police.
An Incident Support Unit, pump appliances and a high volume pump were all used to clear a 90 by 45 metre area before fire officers were stood down at 8pm.
There were reports of power cuts along Bank Street, while Scottish Water workers were also on the scene.
Scottish Borders Council staff also assisted, clearing a series of blocked drains throughout the town.
Other road closures included St John Street and Albert Place, causing chaos for drivers.
The fire and police services also received calls for flooding at Riddell Dumble Park, Wood Street and Gala Water Retail Park.
Elsewhere in the Borders, flood warnings were issued by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency at the Eddleston Water in Peebles, River Teviot between Hawick and Monteviot and River Tweed between Drumelzier and Dawyck.
The heavy rainfall which hit the Borders on Thursday eventually cleared by the early hours of this morning, but the region remains under a flood alert, with rain expected to return this weekend.
