New health centre plan for Lauder

LAUDER has taken another step towards seeing its new health centre housed at Crofts Road.

A fresh application has been submitted by NHS Borders to build the facility, along with 18 car park spaces and landscape works.

It follows Scottish Borders Council’s decision last month to sell Crofts Road’s greenfield site – which includes part of the public park owned by the town’s common good – for £250,000 to the health board.

Of that, £180,000 will be spent on a new play area on land owned by SBC, with the common good fund receiving the balance.

A statement from Aitken Turnbull, architects of the new plans, said: “There has been a previous planning application for a two-practice centre on the proposed site. This application was taken to the planning committee in December 2010 and was minded to grant, subject to the conclusion of a legal agreement.

“The current proposals supersede that scheme with a smaller, single-practice centre.

“The new centre provides all of the services that were included within the previous application, however, the centre would be home to a single GP practice, currently housed in Factors Park.”

Protesters against the Crofts Road plans suggested last month that an alternative site was on offer at the rear of Castle Wynd by local businessman Andy McCord.

However, SBC leader and Lauder councillor David Parker said such an offer was “uneconomical” to take forward.
